Installs and replaces water and sewer lines, fixtures, valves, heaters, water heaters, and other devices working from blueprints, sketches, and written and oral directions. - Tests and locates trouble in plumbing systems; repairs valves, pipelines, faucets, and fixtures, repacking valves and replacing defective parts; cuts and threads pipe; cleans out obstructions in drains for water and sewer systems. - May supervise the work of helpers; may fire boilers and maintain proper steam pressure and water levels on an assigned shift as required. - Estimates cost of new plumbing and installations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER I - Experience: Completion of a recognized plumbers apprenticeship training program. OR II - Experience: Four years of increasingly responsible experience performing work in installing and repairing plumbing systems and equipment; Two years of the required experience may be substituted on the basis of:Completion of 12 semester or 18 quarter units in trade related courses taken at a recognized college being equal to six months of experience. OR - Completion of 144 hours of trade related instruction taken at a union training center, adult school, vocational school or specialized industrial program being equal to six months of experience. Knowledge of: The methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the plumbing trade; pertinent plumbing codes. Ability to: Read and write English at the level necessary for successful job performance; work from blueprints and sketches, or oral and written directions; use the tools and equipment of the plumbing trade; lay out, estimate procedures, and install plumbing systems. Other Requirements:License/ Certificate: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver License at the time of application. The Maintenance Plumber will travel throughout County facilities to perform work assignments as needed. Note: If you are referred for an interview, the selection process will include a practical, hands-on examination to evaluate candidates’ proficiency in basic plumbing methods, tools, and techniques. Physical Requirements: The Maintenance Plumber will pick up materials, equipment, and tools associated with plumbing work from vendors for use in their duties; work in confined spaces; and perform duties within a secured detention facility environment while adhering to all applicable safety and security protocols.
