Work with residents and the community to prevent crime; patrol an assigned area to apprehend suspects, control traffic, enforce laws and regulations, make evictions, and post notices of auction. - Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations incident to arrests, suspected criminal activity and traffic accidents. - Appear and testify in court as to investigative findings and other activities incident to responsibility for law enforcement. - Serve various civil and criminal documents; prepare reports and return them to their original jurisdiction. - Effect custody and ensure safe storage of held property and evidence. - Prepare reports of daily activities as required. - Guard, control, supervise and transport inmates in detention facilities including preparation of required records relative to incarceration of inmates, including booking, period of incarceration, disposition of inmate's personal property, and transfer or release of inmates. - Participate in training of Sheriff's Office personnel; participate in the planning and implementation of various crime prevention and public relations programs in the community at large. - Assigned to special law enforcement details in narcotics, juvenile or other similar matters. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: Graduation from high school, attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test, or possession of a certificate of proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education. Experience: Must be current RSO employee within the classifications of Correctional Deputy and Court Deputy who have successfully completed their probationary period in their current classification. License: (Depending on Assignment) Possession of a valid California, Arizona or Nevada Driver's License. Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship must be obtained by the time of appointment. Age: Must be at least 20 years and 9 months at the start of the academy. Vision: Applicants who wear glasses or hard contact lenses must have uncorrected vision of no worse than 20/40 correctable to 20/20. For soft contact lenses being worn for up to one year or more correctable to 20/20, there are no uncorrected requirements. Please note: Applicants must have normal peripheral fields and color vision. Hearing: Applicants must not have hearing loss greater than 25 d. B frequencies of 500 to 6,000 in either ear. Hearing aides are not permitted to meet these requirements. Physical Agility Test (PAT): Eligible candidates will be required to successfully complete a physical agility test (PAT) within six months of their application date as part of this recruitment process. Candidates will receive email instructions to self-schedule an appointment after their application has been reviewed. The PAT requirements are listed below: Sit-Ups: A minimum of 30 within one minute. Push-Ups: A minimum of 30 within one minute 1.5-Mile Run: Within 13 minutes. Knowledge of: Federal, state and County codes and ordinances and department rules and regulations relating to law enforcement; modern approved principles and procedures of community-based law enforcement work; methods of collaborative problem solving in law enforcement, court and evidence procedures; court decisions affecting law enforcement practices; the use of the English language and mathematical concepts typical of that derived from basic course work in these subjects at the high school level. Ability to: Read, and understand departmental policies, rules, instructions, laws and ordinances and general literature pertaining to law enforcement activities; analyze and interpret legal codes, police problems and criminal evidence; adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action, giving due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances of each situation; understand and follow written and verbal directions; maintain accurate records and prepare clear, concise and understandable reports; perform mathematical computations rapidly and accurately; learn the use and care of small firearms; establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, government officials, community members, and entities while promoting collaborative problem solving; climb barriers, jump obstacles and perform strenuous physical activities; subdue resisting subjects with a minimum of force necessary to effect and arrest; read, write and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance. Pre-Employment. All employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of both a pre-employment physical exam, including a drug/alcohol test, and a criminal background investigation, which involves fingerprinting. (A felony or misdemeanor conviction may disqualify the applicant from County employment.)
