The Director of Library Building Operations and Security provides broad leadership, communication, and central planning for building operations and security throughout Yale Library, which spans over fifteen locations in New Haven and beyond, including Sterling Memorial Library, Arts Library, Beinecke Library, Bass Library, Classics Library, Divinity Library, Lewis Walpole Library in Farmington CT, Library Shelving Facility in Hamden CT, Marx Library, Math Library, Medical Library, and library spaces including Technical Services in 344 Winchester, Beinecke in 344 Winchester, 17 Hillhouse, and Rosenkranz Hall. The Director provides daily operational direction for the operation and management of all central library buildings including Sterling Memorial Library, Bass Library, Beinecke Library, and Music Library. The Director maintains expertise on building and facility systems, infrastructure, occupants, program uses, regulations, and policies to advise, consult, and intervene as needed to minimize the impact of repairs and construction projects on program uses, and to assure safety and code compliance. The Director works closely with the Director of Library Space Strategy and Planning to ensure that library spaces are effectively monitored by on-site security operations and that abnormal, substandard, or risk conditions are detected, reported, escalated, and addressed in a timely manner, and to coordinate on projects where building operations and space planning responsibilities intersect. The Director provides broad leadership of library security operations throughout Yale Library, with an emphasis on special collections security, including practices, procedures, systems, and physical security in special collection reading rooms, in transportation of special collections, in special collection storage, and in staff access and handling — and for assessing and strengthening security as library spaces and collections portfolios develop. The Director provides leadership and direction on behalf of Yale Library with Yale Facilities, particularly trades, custodial, and maintenance functions, as well as Yale security and police departments and vendors, in support of the Yale Library mission. The Director has direct responsibility for approximately $9 million in budgets, monitoring responsibility for an additional $13.5 million in building budgets, and directly supervises the Assistant Director of Library Building Operations, the Head of Library Security, and a Program Coordinator. The Director maintains sufficient working knowledge of library space strategy and planning to step in and provide coverage of essential leadership responsibilities in the other's absence, and actively supports this by staying informed of active projects, priorities, risks, and emerging decisions in that domain. The Director is responsible for ensuring timely response to building operations and security emergencies on a 24 x 7 basis. Required Skills and Abilities 1. Experience leading security operations in environments with high-value collections, cultural property, or comparable security requirements. Ability to develop and implement security policies, procedures, and training programs .. Proven ability to manage budgets and recommend cost-effective solutions. Ability to synthesize technical and programmatic needs, develop alternative solutions, and evaluate and convey requirements to library leaders, Yale Facilities, vendors, and contractors. Ensure timely response to building operations and security emergencies on a 24 x 7 basis, including fire and intrusion alarms, building system failures, and other urgent conditions .. Develop and maintain strong relationships with colleagues and partners in Yale Facilities (particularly trades, custodial, and maintenance), Yale Police, Public Safety, and other security and cultural property protection programs throughout the university; vendors; and colleagues at Yale, in the community, and in the profession. Be a trusted partner to library managers and staff. Maintain a strong commitment to customer service personally and throughout the building operations and security teams, including service quality from vendors and university providers .. Administer, direct, and manage budgets of Library Building Operations and Library Security, consistent with university policies and procedures, including planning, monitoring, and adhering to budget. Directly supervise the Assistant Director of Library Building Operations, the Head of Library Security, and a Program Coordinator .. Lead multi-year planning for Capital Replacement Charge (CRC) building stewardship of buildings and spaces self-supported by library endowments, including Beinecke Library locations on central campus and at Library Shelving Facility and 344 Winchester, as well as Lewis Walpole Library in Farmington. Advise Yale Facilities and library leaders on priorities for multi-year planning for capital maintenance stewardship of buildings and spaces supported by central university CRC funding, including Sterling Memorial Library, Arts Library, Bass Library, Marx Library, Music Library, Library Shelving Facility, and Yale Library Technical Services at 344 Winchester Avenue. Collaborate with the Director of Library Space Strategy and Planning where capital maintenance intersects with space planning priorities .. Serve as the lead on building and facility systems, infrastructure, occupants, program uses, regulations, and policies. Advise, consult, and intervene as needed to minimize impact of repairs and construction projects on program uses, and to assure safety and code compliance. Manage vendors including mechanical sub-contractors assigned to any sites within the library system .. Ensure that effective services are in place for staff to report building, maintenance, and custodial problems, and work closely with Yale Facilities Superintendents and Area Managers to ensure that problems are resolved in a timely manner .. Work closely with the Preservation Department and university colleagues to manage and mitigate risk to cultural heritage property, building occupants, and physical assets. Identify, prioritize, and address actual and potential issues that place library collections at risk .. In partnership with Library Preservation, Yale Facilities, and the Director of Library Space Strategy and Planning, take ownership in emergencies to provide leadership, communication, and support in disaster recovery and emergency response operations, providing leadership and direction to responders to protect staff, collections, and physical assets during an emergency .. Provide broad leadership of library security operations, with an emphasis on special collections security throughout Yale Library. Ensure that security policies, procedures, and training programs meet current needs, comply with applicable regulations, and are applied consistently. Assess the adequacy of security across library locations on an ongoing basis, including through periodic security audits, as library spaces, uses, and the library's collections portfolio evolve — with particular attention to locations where special collections presence is growing or changing .0. Work with Yale University Security and vendors to ensure that all security systems, including access control, are effective and operational. Ensure that access and keys are granted and revoked appropriately and in a timely manner. Collaborate with university-wide emergency management coordinators to maintain emergency response and evacuation plans for library spaces .1. Assure compliance with safety and building code standards and specifications within university policies and procedures. Ensure that regular inspections are conducted of all roofs, windows, security installations, fire equipment, mechanical systems, and physical construction to ensure reliability and compliance with codes and building standards .2. Work closely with the Director of Library Space Strategy and Planning to coordinate on capital and renovation projects where building operations and planning responsibilities intersect. Actively support mutual coverage of essential leadership responsibilities by maintaining shared awareness of active projects, priorities, risks, and emerging decisions across both domains .3. Participate and provide leadership as needed in committees in the library and across the university. Represent the library in university-wide committees and groups as needed. Effectively represent Yale Library needs, opportunities, and impact at the university level .4. As appropriate, contribute at the national/international level, recognize library and cultural property protection trends and opportunities, and use this knowledge to enrich local programs and strategic planning. May represent Yale Library at local, regional, national, and international levels .5. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience. Bachelor's degree and 8 years' experience in building operations, facilities management, security management, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong supervisory experience. Preferred Education and Experience. Experience in an academic, museum, or other cultural institution setting. Demonstrated ability with building automation systems, monitoring and controls systems, and Mechanical/ Electrical/ Plumbing systems. Experience with special collections or cultural property security. Experience in multi-site building operations management. Physical Requirements.
