Provides laser safety services that promote a safe working environment for University personnel and students; and assist in the operation and support of regulatory compliance programs. Responsibilities. Participates in the laser laboratory compliance inspection program. Performs routine laser laboratory onsite safety assessments. Ensures laser use meets State regulatory requirements and other applicable standards, recommends appropriate control measures, and ensures completion of laser safety training by personnel. Under direction of the Assistant Radiation & Laser Safety Officer and the LSO, performs laser beam hazard evaluations, produces reports and documentation, including recommendations for protection of laser users, facilities, and the public. Collects and confirms laser emission parameters for new or current lasers. Assists in update, maintenance, and upgrade of the Laser Safety Program database files. Produces reports and maintains records as appropriate. Provide oversight of the Laser Pointer policy implementation. Coordinates assessments with UT faculty and staff, collects and records laser product information and emission parameters. Provide general safety and compliance support to the Radiation and Laser Safety group, including maintaining laser measurement equipment calibration and repair, support for radioactive materials, X-ray devices, radio-frequency emissions, sampling, surveys, and other activities as needed. Perform other job related functions as assigned. Comply with EHS Principles of Professional Code of Conduct. Abide by federal, state and local laws, UT rules and regulations, policies and procedures. Work collaboratively with other University offices. Drive UT vehicles. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS 157 Section 2.5.4. Required Qualifications. Bachelor's Degree from an accredited academic institution in Laser and Optical Engineering, Health Physics, Nuclear or Radiation Science, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Radiation Biology, or other related field. Two years of experience in environmental health and safety compliance. Eligible to be certified in one of the following Certified Health Physicist CHP by American Academy of Health Physicists, Certified Safety Professional CSP by Board of Certified Safety Professionals, Certified Laser Safety Officer CLSO by Board of Laser Safety, Certified Industrial Hygienist CIH by American Board of Industrial Hygiene. Must be able to pass university and FBI security background checks. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Preferred Qualifications. Master's degree from an accredited academic institution in Engineering, Applied or Basic Science, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or related field. More than four years of full-time health physics or laser safety experience at an academic research institution. Certified in one or more of the following CHP, CSP, CLSO, CIH or comparable certification. USDOT, ICAO, IATA Hazardous Material Shipper's Certification. Driving Required. This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Salary Range$50,000 depending on qualifications.
