The Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of all pool patrons by performing vigilant lifeguard duties and enforcing facility rules. It also supports operational excellence by maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of the pool and surrounding areas. Through proactive monitoring and quick response, this position plays a critical role in promoting a safe, enjoyable, and community-focused aquatic environment .026 Operational Season:Opening Weekend: May 23-24 Memorial Day: Closed May 25 Tuesdays - Sunday: May 26 - August 7 Weekends only: August 9 – September 6 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Monitor pool activities to ensure patron safety and compliance with facility rules; respond promptly to emergencies by performing rescues and administering first aid. Conduct routine safety inspections and attend required training to maintain certifications and meet health code standards. Maintain cleanliness and functionality of the pool and surrounding areas, including monitoring chemical levels, cleaning decks and restrooms, and reporting unsafe conditions or equipment to management. Provide exemplary customer service to all facility users, ensuring clear communication regarding facility closures and operational updates. Maintain regular and timely attendance to support consistent and safe pool operations. Perform additional duties as needed to uphold safety, service quality, and operational efficiency. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Must be at least 16 years old. Must have an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification or be able to obtain the certification before the start of summer season. (ARCL Certification class will be offered by City of San Marcos in April on select weekends) Must work holidays and holiday weekends during operational season. COMPETENCIES AND ENVIRONMENT KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - Knowledge of basic mathematical calculations for measuring and adjusting pool chemical levels. Skill in effective oral communication to teach lessons, educate the public, and provide clear instructions in routine and emergency situations. Skill in customer service and maintaining courteous, professional interactions with the public in a high-contact environment. Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment when determining appropriate actions during emergency situations. Ability to work independently under general supervision while ensuring safety and compliance with established procedures. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS - Physical requirements include working outdoors in heat, humidity and wind. Exposed to chlorine, muriatic acid and other pool chemicals. Navigates slippery surfaces; exposed to noise from crowds, whistles and pump room. Subject to standing, sitting, vision, hearing, talking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling reaching, handling, kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, handling, foot controls, fine dexterity. Lift over 50 lbs rarely.
