Perform regularly scheduled or emergency safety inspections; recommend corrective actions of safety hazards and make follow-up inspections to ensure compliance. - Participate in developing preventive injury and accident instructional training materials. - Provide on-site or classroom type training and instruction on a wide range of safety related matters such as first aid, equipment operation, safe driving and other subjects. - Advise employees and supervisors on accident prevention and safety related matters, and conduct safety meetings on the requirements of the State Occupational Safety and Health Act and applicable Federal regulations. - Notify employees of applicable hazardous materials, and inspect storage and usage of hazardous materials. - Investigate personal injury or vehicle accidents and prepare reports; read reports of claims of accidents or injuries and inspect scenes of accidents, injuries and property damage. - Take photographs and collect and preserve evidence as needed; review and analyze accident and injury reports and determine causes in order to prevent other occurrences. - May research, review, and process reports and legal papers concerning personal and property damage claims. - Interview or correspond with claimants, individuals, attorneys, and insurance representatives in order to provide data pertinent to a claim. - May represent the department on safety matters; may attend meetings of professional safety organizations and the County Safety Committee; prepare and maintain training and other records.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Safety Coordinator Trainee. OPTION I - Education: Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably with major course work in occupational health, safety, industrial hygiene, environmental science, public administration, healthcare administration or a related field. OR OPTION II - Experience: Two years of experience in industrial or safety engineering, building/construction inspection with code enforcement, risk management, which required knowledge and application of State and federal laws relating to occupational safety, worksite inspection and/or mitigation workplace hazards; workplace safety training, accident review/investigation, or claim documentation and reporting. (College level courses in industrial engineering, safety engineering, occupational health and safety, or a closely related field may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of 12 semester or 18 quarter units equaling one year of experience.)Safety Coordinator. Experience: Three years in industrial or safety engineering; occupational health and safety inspection; building/construction inspection with code enforcement; or risk management, which required knowledge and application of state and federal laws relating to occupational safety and which included identifying, evaluating, and making recommendations for the control of hazards, minimizing safety risks, and adhering to code compliance. (College level courses in industrial or safety engineering, occupational health and safety, or a closely related field may substitute for up to two years of the required experience on the basis of 12 semester or 18 quarter units equaling one year of experience.); and/or three years administering a fully functional DOT required Drug and Alcohol Testing Program. Both Levels. Knowledge of: Federal, state, ADA, and other regulations relating to occupational safety and hazardous materials management methods and procedures used in evaluating and correcting unsafe, unhealthful, and hazardous conditions and/or knowledge of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 (49 Code of Federal Regulations Part 382 et. seq. and Part 40) and any other state and local regulations/laws that may pertain to drug and alcohol testing of specified vehicle operators; legal descriptions, their interpretation and application; research and investigative techniques. Ability to: Investigate accidents and/or work site hazards and prepare reports; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; detect unsafe conditions, practices, regulatory non-adherence and implement corrections; plan, organize, and conduct research for analysis, and make recommendations based on findings and/or plan implement and administer a comprehensive drug and alcohol testing program; instruct in the methods and procedures of safety practices and work site compliance; prepare clear and concise reports; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of the work. Other Requirements. License: Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
