Join our Office of Public Safety team as a Staff Security Officer. In this role, you'll do more than just patrol our physical campus; you will play a vital part in Bethel’s mission to educate and equip students in a Christ-centered community. As a member of our staff, you serve as a minister of the gospel by fostering a clean, safe, and welcoming environment where students, faculty, staff, and guests can grow and thrive. Reporting to the Manager of Security Operations, you'll carry out the day-to-day responsibilities of maintaining a secure campus presence. You'll support university community members, respond to both emergency and non-emergency calls, and utilize quick decision-making skills to support campus partners in creating a safe environment. This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year position. Because safety is a 24/7 priority, flexibility in working hours is required, including weekends and some holidays. The pay range for this role is $23.80-$23.95 This role is 3rd shift: 12 am-8 am. What you'll do. Campus Patrol and Enforcement – 40%Proactively patrol University campuses to maintain a visible and reassuring safety presence. Enforce University policies and work toward ensuring the overall safety of the Bethel University community. Respond to and appropriately handle both emergency and non-emergency calls or incidents, including medical emergencies, fire alarms, motor vehicle accidents, and community assistance (escorts, vehicle assists, lockouts). Incident Response and Reporting – 25%Conduct security interviews on persons displaying suspicious behavior, and handle unattended items or vehicles appropriately. Utilize quick decision-making skills and sound judgment in accordance with Bethel University policies and State statutes. Request assistance from external emergency services (law enforcement, fire department, EMS) as necessary. Maintain clear and proper radio traffic, keeping dispatchers and supervisors informed, and write detailed, accurate electronic incident reports. Emergency Preparedness and Compliance – 15%Maintain constant readiness to respond to campus emergencies effectively. Stay updated on university policies, procedures, and relevant state statutes. Successfully complete specialized training, including a 40-hour behavior detection class (SIRA®), use of force, defensive tactics, and basic first aid/ CPR. Safety, Traffic, and Event Management – 10%Conduct periodic safety and fire inspections as assigned by leadership. Issue parking violation tickets and provide active traffic direction during peak times or events. Set up and tear down safety signs, cones, and barricades for campus events. Community Engagement and Assistance – 10%Provide high-quality, friendly service to campus guests and community members at all times. Assist students, faculty, staff, and visitors with safety concerns, directions, and general inquiries. Qualifications. Required Education & Certifications. High School Diploma or Equivalent. Must be currently First Aid/ CPR certified, or have the ability to obtain certification immediately upon beginning employment. Must be Baton, Repulse, and Handcuff certified, or have the ability to obtain certification immediately upon beginning employment. Preferred Education & Experience. Associate’s degree . years of public safety, security, or related law enforcement experience. Previous experience working within a higher education environment. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities. Critical Thinking: Independent thinker with strong observation skills and the ability to multitask in high-stress situations. Teamwork: A proven track record of working effectively as part of a collaborative team. Physical Fitness: Ability to maintain an adequate level of physical fitness to effectively perform duties, including a timely and active physical response to emergency situations.
