Requirements, and Qualifications Position Summary, Requirements, and Qualifications Overview The College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) at Northern Illinois University (NIU) invites applications for a Research Data Collection Monitor to support for the mission of the Illinois Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (IL-BRFSS) grant funded by Illinois Department of Public Health. NIU is a Carnegie Doctoral/ Research University-High Research Activity located in DeKalb, IL. The main campus is in DeKalb, which is a diverse and growing community, 65 miles west of Chicago’s “Loop” and 40 miles southeast of Rockford with education centers in Rockford and Naperville. DeKalb county, with a population of about 100,000, is a modern paradox, a rural/urban community. It is simultaneously recognized for its manufacturing and rich farmlands, as evidenced by it being the site of the first manufacturing of barbed wire and the development of hybrid seed corn. NIU faculty, staff, and students live in communities throughout Northern Illinois, including the western Chicago suburbs, city of Rockford, and small towns within driving distance from the university. The recently revitalized downtown city of DeKalb offers shops, restaurants, and other amenities. Business investment is evident in DeKalb’s Chicago West Business Center, whose residents include companies such as Facebook/ Meta, Ferrara Candy, and Kraft/ Heinz. Position Summary The employee in this position plays a key role in maintaining BRFSS high standards for productivity, data quality, professionalism, and interviewer development. This position combines interviewing, evaluation, coaching, and operational support. Monitors work closely with Supervisors to ensure the accuracy of collected data and provide feedback that helps Interviewers improve their performance. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Regular Monitoring Conduct regular monitoring through obtaining and recording data, including completing Monitor Evaluation Forms (ME - Fs), Call Audit Feedback Forms (CAFFS), and delivering feedback sessions Provide immediate feedback for Interviewers as needed Collaborate with Supervisors to identify and report problems, including the escalation of issues, identification of training needs, and maintenance of consistency in monitoring practices Obtain, record, and maintain data files according to project protocols and practices Interviewing Interview survey subjects in accordance with detailed instructions concerning the kind of information to be obtained OFA & Supervisor Desk Support the OFA Desk and Supervisor Desk by answering incoming calls and assisting Interviewers during shifts Assist Supervisors with special projects such as data input, collection, and analysis to support productivity initiatives Performance Enhancement and Transition Protocol Provide PET-P support for struggling interviewers Training and Development Participate in training and development activities, including updates on policies and procedures Attend refresher trainings Aid in the development of new hire training materials Meet regularly with the Monitor Supervisor for progress reports and updates Recording Checks and Other Projects Support quality assurance by assisting with recording checks and callbacks as needed. Required for Spanish-fluent Monitors Participate in Supervisor initiatives that support quality assurance and boost productivity Other related duties as assigned Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service) High School diploma or equivalent. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) (Civil Service) Ability to solicit information from the public. Specialty Factors (Civil Service) None Preferred Qualifications (Civil Service) Strong knowledge of BRFSS interviewing standards and procedures. Excellent communication and coaching skills with the ability to deliver professional, and constructive feedback. Attention to detail in reviewing calls, dispositions, and interviewer performance. Ability to balance multiple priorities and meet monitoring deadlines. Previous experience as an SRL Interviewer with a record of quality and reliability.
