Position Summary The Field Service Technician supports the NIU physical voice and video network infrastructure for the NIU campus and satellite locations. This position performs work throughout network facilities locations (e.g., closets, basements, tunnels, use equipment to work up to 80’ high and climb ladders up to 12’ tall, etc.) and responds to and resolves work orders, requests and incidents to resolve outages and disruptions. He/she fulfills dispatch instructions, performs basic inspections and troubleshooting, and provides reports and time estimates for required work. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Warehouse Operations and Inventory Follows established Warehouse procedures to ensure proper equipment, tools, and accessories check-in and check-out Verifies work order and request details to ensure service trucks are loaded with required equipment, tools, and accessories Notifies Warehouse staff to indicate supplies shortages and new tools required for replacing broken items Assists with shipments to ensure stock is properly arranged Events, Projects, and On-call Services Maintains availability to fulfill off-hours and weekly on-call assignments Assists with campus event set-ups to ensure network and media systems connectivity Assists with events operations to ensure network services are maintained and functioning properly Moves, Adds, Deletes, and Disconnects Receives work orders and requests to complete pre-planning for locations moves, remodeling, and reconfigurations Performs installs and removals to ensure work is done correctly Verifies new services are functional to ensure WO requirements are met Maintaining Network Equipment and Service Receives tickets from the Service Desk to act on service disruptions Receives field technician dispatch instructions to inspect customer locations Performs testing and evaluations to verify disruptions Confirms service restorations with customers to complete trouble tickets Updates trouble tickets with work details to inform customers of work performed Installation of Interior Voice, Data and Campus Cable Communications Media Receives finalized work orders and requests to outline installations requests Performs installations and terminations of voice and campus cable service to ensure connections in the telecom closet and customer site are correct Interacts with Network Engineering to activate switch components Documents work orders and requests to identify install components and to verify proper communication service Performs testing to ensure functionality of installations Other Related Duties as Assigned Other Related Duties as Assigned Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service) High school diploma or equivalent. Any one or any combination totaling one (1) year (12 months) from the following categories: College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent: 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months) Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months) 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months) Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months) Work experience in IT-related functions such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field. Based on position requirements, additional education, training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position may be required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) (Civil Service) Knowledge of the systems and operations used within the areas and departments of responsibility. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to oversee and coordinate activities of user groups. Ability to effectively communicate and professionally interact with all staff levels and customer groups. Ability to identify and resolve technical problems. Ability to demonstrate fundamental knowledge of effective troubleshooting methodologies.
