Mass. DOT Design-Build Section is seeking to add a Bridge Technical Reviewer to their team. This role will involve the review of design plans and calculations for complex bridge projects and require excellent communication and problem-solving skills to work through project specific issues and unique challenges. This position will report to the Director of Alternative Project Delivery and will assist in advancing Design-Build projects in accordance with sound engineering principles, applicable laws, regulations and standards. Detailed Duties and Responsibilities. Reviews Structural Designs: Reviews structural aspects of Design-Build project submissions. Ensures design reviews are in compliance with project RFP requirements, AASHTO Specifications, and Mass. DOT Bridge Manual requirements. Reviews are thorough, accurate, adhere to industry and Mass. DOT standards and done in a timely manner. Provides support to Design-Build Project Managers and Districts by providing structural input on RFI responses, NC - Rs, and design changes. Demonstrates Structural Engineering Knowledge: Demonstrates knowledge of bridge analysis, design, and advanced computer modeling techniques as well as software used for structural engineering analysis and bridge design. Make recommendations on bridge design criteria and interpretation of the Mass. DOT Bridge Manual. Demonstrates a strong understanding of the design of bridge superstructures, substructures, and foundations of conventional bridges. Coordinates with Reviewers and Project Staff: Demonstrates proficiency in resolving structural issues by coordinating meetings with appropriate parties such as District or Consultant reviewers. Resolves structural questions raised by FHWA. Communicates guidance to Project Managers on structural issues accurately and effectively. Collaborate with other Design-Build Structural Review Engineers to review structural submissions and discuss comments. Coordinates with Mass. DOT Bridge Section for Bridge Manual Waivers and technical discussions regarding projects. Acts as a resource to District Project staff on structural topics. Represents Mass. DOT on selection committees as necessary. Collaborate with the Design-Build Team: Ensures review comments are communicated effectively to the Design-Build Team. Provides a direct line of communication to the Design-Build Teams to resolve structural issues. Actively attends Over the Shoulder review meetings hosted by Design-Builders and actively participates in Comment-Resolution meetings. Preferred Qualifications. Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering. Knowledge of the terminology and standard abbreviations used in civil engineering. Knowledge of the principles of hydraulics as applied to surface drainage pipes and culverts. Knowledge of the properties and characteristics of concrete and asphalt; mechanical properties of fluids; theory and practice of plane surveying; Knowledge of the engineering properties of soils. Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment and materials used in building, bridge, highway, road, street or tunnel construction; Knowledge of mathematical formulas used to compute volumes and areas. Knowledge of the types and skill in the uses of equipment used in plane surveying, knowledge of the methods of soil testing. Knowledge of mathematical computations used in solving civil engineering problems. Knowledge of elementary algebra, trigonometry, plane and solid geometry, integral and differential calculus; knowledge of the standard procedures for taking field notes in connection with plane surveying. Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of civil engineering data, to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. Ability to understand, apply and explain the laws, rules, regulations, procedures, specifications and guidelines governing assigned unit activities and in connection with the construction and maintenance of highways, bridges, buildings, etc. This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus (“Signing Bonus”) if you are newly hired at Mass. DOT. Current Mass. DOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts: 1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee's first paycheck. 2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee’s probationary period.
