This Correctional Support Trades Supervisor II (CSTS II) is a Food Service Lieutenant for the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC), at the Sterling Correctional Facility. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates; ensuring efficient and effective food service operations and supervising staff and inmates. Position promotes the CDOC policies, mission and vision. Position exemplifies a professional workforce that embodies honesty, integrity and cooperation, creating work opportunities and developing inmate skills in preparation for community reentry. Safety and Security - Position maintains safety and security of facility and work sites; through clear and accurate communication trains and guides staff and inmates in the proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment and chemicals; enforces security procedures by conducting work site searches; monitors workplace environment and inmates behavior, paying close attention to changes, inappropriate activity or potential problems; initiates verbal reprimands when warranted and, if necessary, physically controls inmates with the proper application of restraints or "use of force" techniques; monitors, supervises and escorts inmates according to facility policy and limits inmate access to restricted areas; position performs inmate counts and transportation; responds to emergency situations such as fights, fires and escapes according to agency policy and writes and submits required reporting. Through conscientious observation, clear communications and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations, facility Implementation Adjustments and the Code of Penal Discipline, position promotes a safe and secure environment. Supervision - Position provides safety and security through the supervision of assigned staff and inmate workers; promotes a high level of performance by setting the work standard according to agency mission, vision and values. Trains and instructs staff and inmates in the appropriate use of all relevant tools, equipment and procedures to ensure efficient, safe and effective completion of assigned tasks; stresses safe practices and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for self, staff and inmates; exemplifies a professional workforce that embodies honesty, integrity and ethical behavior. Staff Supervision - Participates in hiring process by interviewing candidates and making recommendations; prepares performance plans, and conducts performance evaluations; resolves informal staff and/or inmate grievances. Assigns tasks, monitors and inspects work progress and ensures assigned staff receives required training; coaches and mentors staff regarding agency supervision and processes and in preparation for career growth and opportunity. Inmate Supervision - Participates in the interview and hiring process in order to ensure appropriate placement on work crews and training needs are met; position ensures inmate workers are trained in all aspects of food service operations. Ensures inmate evaluations are completed, tracks and calculates inmate hours and pay, creates schedule and assigns tasks and resolves informal grievances according to agency policy; reduces inmate idleness and creates real life work opportunities to prepare inmates for community reentry. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:Comprehensive understanding of CDOC Performance Management Program (PMP) policy. Maintain safety and security of facility and work sites. Ability to train and instruct staff and inmates in the appropriate use of all relevant tools, equipment and procedures. Ensure timely completion of prep, post-production and sanitation duties and an organized, systematic shift change. Ensure safe, secure, compliant and cost effective food service operations. Ensure accurate meal service, inventory maintenance and required documentation and reporting; Participate in hiring process. Effectively utilize Performance Management Program (PMP) for assigned staff through documentation of staff work habits and skills in order to provide thoughtful, constructive performance plans and evaluations. Coach and mentor staff regarding agency policy, supervision and processes, encouraging a cohesive team, career development and ensuring the completion of mandatory annual training. Initiate verbal reprimands when warranted, and if necessary, physically control inmates with the proper application of restraints or 'use of force' techniques. Resolve conflict and informal grievances at the lowest level possible. Position may be required to work additional hours/shifts and/or provide coverage for a custody control post.
