Major Responsibilities:Provides pre- inter-, intra-, and post-procedure support for the endoscopy team to include competency in the care of patients and families members. Demonstrates competency in providing care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Communicates/ documents appropriate clinical findings to the nurse and ensures all biopsies taken are handed off to the RN for processing. Pre-cleans endoscopes in room using specified detergent and suction, carries dirty scopes in container to scope cleaning room, completes leak testing of all scopes prior to submersion in water, brushes and scrubs endoscopes in solution of water and detergent prior to placing scope in AER. Ensures scopes are high level disinfected by using AER with predetermined settings. Ensures all scopes are hung into scope cabinet following completion of AER process. Assists the nurse in providing patient care as appropriate to the setting, which may include vital signs, setting up monitors and obtaining needed supplies and equipment, which may include specimens and medications. Serves as a resource person and acts as a preceptor for new endoscopy techs. Takes responsibility for completing the orientation checklist for new hires, and for orientation for all technical aspects of procedures to include: snares, biopsies, use of all supplies for any procedure completed within the endoscopy department. Properly utilizes supplies and equipment by opening supplies only when needed, properly cleaning and disinfecting equipment and supplies according to protocol, utilizing the most cost effective supplies, and assuring all charges are given to RN to enter into the medical record. Maintaining appropriate levels of other supplies and equipment and verification of expiration dates. Sequester and report faulty equipment, arranging for replacement and/or repair. Admits, discharges and or transfers patients to and within the Endoscopy Center. Safely positions and transports patients to assure lines not disrupted, decreased risk for bruises and bumps, maintenance of skin integrity. Assures patient is in correct position for procedure to be completed. Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:Gastroenterology Associate certified within 18 months after hire. Education Required:High School Diploma or GED is required. Experience Required:None. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:Must be able to use visual near and distance acuity. Must have verbal ability to communicate in person and over the phone or radio. Must be able to assist co-workers in transfers and transport supplies, patients/residents, or equipment using good body mechanics. Must have functional range of motion of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines, upper and lower extremities with a grip strength of 60-80 pounds, specific to the job class evaluation. Must be able to forward reach, overhead reach, bend, squat, kneel and change from one position to the other rapidly. Must be able to lift 25-60 lbs. and carry 25-50 pounds specific to job class evaluation. Must be able to tolerate high noise, busy atmospheres and noxious odors. Must be able to work in noisy environments and be self directed to complete jobs as ordered. Must be able to remain calm under stressful situations. Must be able to assess and respond to multiple situations simultaneously. Must be able to assist co-workers in multiple overlapping tasks simultaneously. Must be able to prioritize job tasks and organize work space to be efficient and conducive to completing work tasks as assigned in a timely manner.
