Generates profitable wholesale sales, renewable sales, and services opportunities for Xcel Energy. Develops extensive professional electric industry contacts, bringing market intelligence back to the trading and marketing function. Maintains positive customer relationships with both purchasers and suppliers. Acts as a mentor for less experienced originators by utilizing experiences in dealing with customers and energy and renewable markets. Essential Responsibilities. Generates profitable wholesale electric sales, renewables, and emission credit sales. Identifies customer needs and develops different structures of electric services agreements. Uses electric industry experience in evaluating industry trends, company data, and the business environment to identify prospective mid-market and longer term power origination opportunities. Develops positive long-term relationships with key counterparties. Prepares and presents power purchase/supply proposals to customers. Makes oral and written sales presentations to senior management of potential customers, as well as Xcel Energy's senior management. Promotes sales of power and renewables to other utilities by building and maintaining positive customer relationships with existing customers. Uses network of industry contacts and relationships to bring back needed market intelligence. Works closely with the trading desk to develop structured transactions wanted by customers in the wholesale markets. Is responsible for understanding and using various pricing models and has a deep understanding of centralized electric market operations, including markets such as the Midwest ISO and the Southwest Power Pool. Understands various transmission tariffs and is able to acquire firm & non-firm transmission paths needed to support transactions. May be assigned to various renewable and/or emission credit markets. Assists Wholesale Account management to fill any short-term needs to meet resource adequacy requirements for Xcel Energy Operating Companies. Develops, gains needed approvals, and implements wholesale sales strategies for Xcel Energy Operating Companies. Plays a key part in helping to set corporate objectives and strategic direction. Utilizes industry knowledge, including relationships with key counterparties to support the Market Operations team in promoting Xcel Energy objectives in various industry forums. Provides technical market knowledge support to Purchased Power during the negotiation of long-term purchased power agreements. Mentors other originators by utilizing past experiences with customers, energy markets, and/or transmission expertise. Is recognized within Xcel Energy as an expert in mid-term structured power transactions. May be called upon to provide testimony in regulatory proceedings. Minimum Requirements. Master's degree (preferably MBA) in engineering, business, economics or related field. Eight to ten years of equivalent experiences in trading and marketing or technical sales may be substituted for a degree. Minimum of 5 year's experience in the energy industry. At least 3 year's experience in power marketing, trading, or origination role. Preferred Qualifications. Deep understanding of ISO/ RTO market structures and rules, with a focus on MISO, SPP, and SPP RTO Expansion (RTOE), including resource adequacy constructs, capacity obligations, and auction frameworks. Demonstrated ability to structure and execute transactions that support utility system needs, including capacity, energy, and reliability requirements across multiple time horizons. Established commercial relationships with counterparties holding or controlling generation and capacity resources in core Xcel regions (MISO North, SPP South, and WECC/ Front Range). Strong understanding of regulated utility business models, including cost recovery constructs, regulatory obligations, and the alignment of market activity with utility customer outcomes. Experience partnering with resource planning teams to develop and execute strategies that meet both long-term portfolio needs and near-term system requirements. Proven track record of working closely with utility operations and dispatch teams to ensure market activities support day-to-day reliability, operational flexibility, and system constraints. Ability to balance commercial objectives with risk management and compliance requirements, ensuring activities are aligned with corporate risk policies and regulatory standards of conduct. Demonstrated focus on customer and system value creation through market transactions, with an emphasis on supporting utility-serving obligations rather than standalone proprietary trading strategies.
