WAMU 88.5 is a public media station owned and operated by American University. WAMU is the source for local, regional and NPR news and original programs in Washington DC. Since 1961, WAMU has been amplifying voices and sharing stories from the many neighborhoods and communities in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. The WAMU 1 A Assistant will provide support to the 1 A production team, with a focus on listener engagement, while learning about the ins and outs of producing a daily show, as well as assist in triaging and responding to listener inquiries received from the 1 Asupport@wamu.org email, which will include online story searches and light tech support, and will help craft responses for more nuanced messages as necessary. The student will also look for meaningful listener contributions in the form of voice memos and emails to use on-air, working alongside producers to bring that critical engagement into 1 A’s shows. The student will have the opportunity to learn about booking guests and writing questions for hosts, and pitch stories alongside producers. The student will also help prepare the studio for airtime and will escort guests coming in for the live show. Lastly, the student will provide other administrative support, including opening and categorizing books the show receives, and preparing swag packages for the 1 A news quiz winners. Essential Functions:Provide support to the 1 A production team. Assist in triaging and responding to listener inquiries. Help prepare the studio. Provide administrative support. Other duties assigned. Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work: Part-time .5 - 20 hours per week. Salary Range:$18.40 - $20.00 per hour. Required Education and Experience:The student must have an interest in or experience in media and customer service. The student must have good office-level communication skills. Additional Eligibility Qualifications:The applicant should be available to work during normal work hours (approximately between 9 am and 5 pm on weekdays). Expected to work between 15 and 20 hours each week. The ideal start date for this position is 05/11/26 and it will end on 08/15/2026. This position will report to the Senior Supervising Producer, 1 A. Other Details. This position is available only to enrolled American University students.
