San Bernardino County Land Use Services is recruiting for a Building and Safety Technician Trainee - who process a variety of planning, building, and other development related permit applications, provide information to the public, and perform field investigations for the Building and Safety Division. Duties may include:Provide direct customer service at the public counter, online platforms, self-service kiosks, over the phone, and through email correspondence, assisting applicants, contractors, and the public with permit-related inquiries and project processing. Conduct permit research by reviewing historical records, permits, plans, and related documentation to assist customers, staff, and outside agencies. Perform application intake functions, including verifying required documentation, and assisting customers with permit submittal requirements. Scan, upload, index, and maintain electronic records of documents, plans, and supporting materials to ensure accurate record retention and accessibility. Trainees work under close supervision while receiving training and acquiring the knowledge and abilities necessary for promotion to Land Use Technician ($57,720 - $79,372 annually). - Official job title: Land Use Technician Trainee; for more detailed information, refer to the Land Use Technician Trainee job description. Positions exist in the Planning and Building and Safety divisions. The results eligible list may be used to fill vacancies throughout Land Use Services as they occur. Immediate vacancies exist in the city of San Bernardino, Desert, and Mountain region. Applications are also being accepted for Land Use Technician. A separate application is required. Memoranda of Understanding (MOU)CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT - Pre-Employment Process: Applicants must successfully pass a background check prior to appointment. Work Schedule: Candidates must be available to work weekends and holidays, as required. Travel: Travel throughout the County may be required and employees will be required to make provisions for such transportation. Employees must be able to work in varied terrains throughout the County, including mountain and desert regions. Promotion: Land Use Technician Trainees are eligible for promotion to Land Use Technician ($57,720 - $79,372 annually) upon meeting job requirements and receiving a satisfactory work progress report, and must qualify for promotion within 12 months or be terminated. Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is unable to consider candidates who require Visa Sponsorship at this time or in the future. Candidates must be able to present their legal right to work in the United States. Minimum Requirements Candidates must meet one of the Requirement Options below to qualify. REQUIREMENT OPTION 1:Six (6) months of full-time equivalent experience working in San Bernardino County Land Use Services. REQUIREMENT OPTION 2:Six (6) months of full-time equivalent experience assisting the public with processing permits and applications or explaining rules and regulations of a public agency, reviewing parcel maps or conducting research related to community development. REQUIREMENT OPTION 3:Fifteen (15) semester (or 23 quarter) units of completed college-level coursework from an accredited college or university in urban development, building inspection technology, code enforcement, land surveying or a closely related field. A list of related coursework must be submitted with the application. Desired Qualifications Ideal candidates will possess strong customer service and organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask effectively. Candidates must also be available to work weekends and holidays, as required, and be able to work in varied terrains throughout the County, including mountain and desert regions.
