Performs intermediate skilled work providing labor work in construction, repair, and maintenance of the water distribution system and assisting in plant operations, maintaining water distribution lines, operating assigned machinery and equipment, performing preventive maintenance and repairs, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the assigned supervisor. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, with a desire to enter the field of municipal water service. They will demonstrate a commitment to be a positive and productive member of a team. They will indicate an interest in furthering their education and work experience, which may increase their opportunities for advancement. SPECIAL NOTE:Candidate must possess Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Grade 1 Water Treatment or Grade 1 Water Distribution Certification or equal grade certification from another state at the time of hire and CDL, Class A with tanker endorsement. ADEQ certification must be obtained at hire. The selected candidate who does not possess the required certification/ CDL will be considered a trainee at the time of hire. The incumbent works outdoors and is exposed to odors and extreme temperatures. May require the use of a respirator. May be subject to call back. Primary assignment will be in water distribution. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:High School diploma or GED and minimal experience in the use of hand tools, construction, repair, and maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience. The selected candidate who does not possess the required certification will be considered a trainee at the time of hire. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with government agencies, City employees, and the general public. Operates and maintains motor vehicles, including dump trucks, backhoes, tankers, and other work-related equipment requiring an appropriate valid driver’s license. Use of a computer for email, work order entries, and looking at equipment manuals. Perform site maintenance such as painting, weed abatement, trash pick-up, and all other tasks to maintain a professional and clean site appearance. Follows strict safety protocols including, but not limited to confined space entry, lock-out/tag-out, fall protection, and working on ladders/heights. Hot taps water mains and run service lines to residence property; perform digging, pipefitting, makes repairs to water main and service lines. Installs meters, fire hydrants, service lines, water mains, and valves. Must meet and maintain all training and education requirements for the position. Forklift Training. Flagger's Training. NCCO Crane Operator Certification Training. Taps water main sewer line and runs service line to residence property; perform digging, pipefitting, and slope calculations; repairs to water main and service line. Installs meters, fire hydrants, service lines, and water mains. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Some knowledge of concepts and application of utility systems; some knowledge of tools and equipment used in the utility field; some knowledge of following City policies and procedures guidelines; some knowledge of safety practices in the performance of utility operation activities and compliance with applicable rules and regulations. Skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment. Ability to complete data collection forms and daily log books entries; ability to identify and diagnose operational problems, and recommend alterations, adjustments, and procedural changes to correct problems and maintain system stability; ability to perform a confined space entry; ability to use operator and other assigned equipment, motor vehicles, machinery, and tools; ability to perform preventive maintenance and repairs; ability to carry out oral and written instructions; ability to work under adverse conditions; ability to detect by inspection worn or broken parts; ability to read and interpret blueprints of utility systems, service orders, and maintenance manuals; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, contractors, supervisors, vendors, and the general public.
