Under the general direction of the Dean, the School of Social Sciences at UC Irvine seeks a Senior Assistant Dean who provides administrative leadership and day-to-day management of the general operations and implementation of the School’s mission and strategies. The incumbent is tasked with upholding and exemplifying excellence in the University’s core competencies -- job mastery, goal accomplishment, enterprise contribution and innovation -- while representing the Dean and School to members of the campus, UC system and the community at large. As the University continues to expand and shift culturally, it is imperative that the incumbent supports change management at the School level while aiding in the facilitation of effective change enterprise-wide. The incumbent is responsible for the entire scope of planning, operations, and resource management for the School, involving its instructional, research, and administrative functions with administrative management responsibilities for the following functional departments: Anthropology, Chicano-Latino Studies, Cognitive Sciences, Economics, Global and International Studies, Language Science, Logic and Philosophy of Science, Political Science and Sociology, as well as the School’s research and administrative units. The incumbent conducts extensive planning for all operational, resource and program needs; directs financial operations; oversees technology support operations for both administrative and instructional computing; provides leadership for management of all space, facilities, and capital needs; management responsibility for all human resources issues (both academic and staff) in the School. The incumbent collaborates closely with other management level staff in the School in providing real-time data and analysis to the Dean to assist in mid- to long-range planning, scenario development, and crisis management. Demonstrated ability to respond thoroughly and proactively to the School’s needs in ways that meet the objectives and goals which further its academic mission. Ability to develop long-range plans that include financial commitments for capital expansion projects, facilities renovation and capital equipment purchases for instructional, research, and production facilities. Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience with, regulations governing the financial administration of federal and state government research contracts and grants. Demonstrated success in analyzing complex data, problems, situations, practices or procedures to: define the problem or objective, identify relevant concerns or factors, identify patterns, tendencies, and relationships, formulate logical and objective conclusions, recognize alternatives and their implications and develop creative plans to meet needs. Skill in overseeing the preparation of informational reports, materials, and statistics responding to inquiries, surveys, and reporting requirements from sources inside and outside the University. Strong analytical skills for overseeing all aspects of accreditation processes. Leadership ability for undertaking organizational reviews and development, long-range personnel planning, employee training and development, and policy formulation, and analysis. Skills in negotiating, exchanging ideas, information, and proposals with others to formulate policies and programs to efficiently arrive at decisions, conclusions, and solutions. Demonstrated knowledge of assessment issues and practices in higher education, especially those related to academic programs. General knowledge of postsecondary academic programs and policy. Demonstrated competency in understanding and helping to foster an inclusive environment with attentiveness to the needs of our diverse workforce and student body Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training 10 yearsof relevant work experience in higher education, with a minimum of 8 years managing an academic, degree-granting unit, including responsibility for all relevant administrative functions as well as support for faculty and academic programs. Preferred: Knowledge of UCI capital planning, facilities and space regulations and practices. Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll. Thorough knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs. Working knowledge of the policies, procedures, and practices of the UC system and the University of California, Irvine. Total Rewards
