The Illinois Department of Central Management Services is seeking to hire a Building and Grounds Laborer in the Chicago Northern Region area. This position will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of various locations, performing exterior maintenance of facilities, assisting with maintaining heating, cooling, and ventilation systems as well as loading and unloading trucks as needed, and operating equipment including tractors, backhoes, end loaders, and snow removal equipment as needed. The ideal candidate has knowledge of janitorial cleaning and grounds maintenance equipment along with strong organizational and communication skills. We invite all qualified candidates to apply! Position Essential Functions Under immediate supervision of the Facility Supervisor, performs nonskilled cleaning tasks and building and ground maintenance labor functions for the Central Management Service (CMS) various Chicago/ Northern Region operated facilities. Performs exterior maintenance of facilities. Assists in maintaining heating, cooling, and ventilating systems. Loads and unloads trucks. Operates equipment, including tractors lacking backhoe, end loaders, lawn trimmers, lawn mowers, snow removal equipment (including blowers and plows), hedge clippers, pallet jacks, dollies, spreaders, tillers, desk jacks, ladders, and leaf blowers. Travels to various facilities within the Chicago & Northern Region on an as-needed basis to ensure facilities are regularly maintained. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above. Minimum Qualifications Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school. Preferred Qualifications Prefers working knowledge of the use and care of various janitorial equipment. Prefers working knowledge of grounds maintenance equipment (e.g., tractor lawn mower, string trimmer, and shovel) use and maintenance Prefers working knowledge of building/grounds maintenance and cleaning methods. Prefers one (1) year of professional experience following both oral and written instructions. Conditions of Employment Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history. Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This may require the ability to work evenings and weekends. This also requires the ability to work in a 24 hour ‘on call’ capacity. Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires a valid driver’s license. Requires the ability to use agency technology/equipment (i.e., mobile phone, laptop, etc.) properly in accordance with information security awareness policies and confidentiality guidelines. Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties. This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
