There are two (2) vacancies, one (1) in the Aviation Division and one (1) in the Maritime Division. Under general supervision, Leaders act as the working lead persons in the construction, maintenance operation and repair tasks in connection with operating and maintaining Port facilities and properties; and performs related work as required. Examples of Duties Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed. Incumbent may perform other related duties at the equivalent level. Acts as working lead person participating in routine and emergency construction, maintenance and repair of roofs, buildings, wharves, piers, bulkheads, culverts, concrete or asphalt curbs, gutters, and sidewalks, sanitary sewer and storm drain conduits and appurtenant structures thereto, fences, railroad tracks and switches and other Port facilities; leads and participates in weed abatement work in non-landscaped areas. Leads and participates in routine and emergency construction, reconstruction, paving and patching of asphalt and concrete streets, taxiways, runways and paved harbor areas. Trains semiskilled employees and conducts tailgate meetings as needed. Drives a variety of trucks in transporting men, equipment and materials to and from work projects. Uses a variety of motorized, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic powered tools common to the construction industry. Keeps accurate logbooks and records; prepares time cards for crew and uses computer, as directed, to generate memoranda or other reports to be submitted to foreman. Observes and reports unsafe operations, procedures, and work conditions inconsistent with Port policies and procedures. Ensures that individuals assigned to them are wearing the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE’s) required for any particular job. Performs related duties as assigned to keep work efforts progressing. Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE - This position requires a combination of education and experience reflecting possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. A typical combination would include:Completion of high school. Two years of semiskilled laboring experience in a Port facilities or municipal public works, construction and maintenance setting. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES - To perform the typical tasks and duties of the position successfully, the knowledge, skills and/or abilities listed below are required. Knowledge of:Methods and practices relating to the construction, maintenance and repair of Port facilities. Use and operation of common construction tools and work equipment such as trucks, power tools, etc. Current safety practices and procedures. State motor vehicle laws and licenses required for this class. Rules for the safe operation of trucks and other vehicles required for this class. Computer hardware and software required on the job. Basic supervisory principles and practices. Ability to:Use and operate common construction tools and work equipment such as trucks, power tools, etc. Understand and obey state motor vehicle laws. Follow oral and written instructions. Keep accurate records and make reports. Operate a personal computer, utilizing current MIS supported word processing, spreadsheet, and database software. Work independently within established guidelines. Establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with all persons contacted in the performance of duties and to work as a team. Work under deadlines and coordinate several concurrent assignments. Work with minimum supervision.
