West Chester University of Pennsylvania’s Public Safety Department invites applicants for the vacant Security Officer (part-time, temporary) positions. The shifts available are 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. The members of the Department of Public Safety are committed to enhancing the university experience by maintaining a safe, orderly and inviting environment for our students, employees and guests to study, work and enjoy all of what the university has to offer. All security officers are responsible for providing security services to the university community and for the protection of state property. To help maintain the safety and wellbeing of our campus community, Security Officers are responsible for active patrol of our campus property. This includes all residence halls, academic buildings, parking garages, and campus grounds. The ideal candidate possesses a firm understanding of the role of security in a university environment. A successful candidate must embrace the concept of fair and impartial enforcement with respect to the rights of others. The ideal candidate must have the ability to work under varying weather conditions; The ability to remain alert and to act quickly and calmly in emergencies; demonstrate excellent customer service and communication skills; demonstrated ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to enforce violations of the student code of conduct fairly while maintaining a respectful demeanor. This position is deemed "essential" and must remain or report to work during partial or full day closings of the university due to hazardous road conditions, emergency circumstances or other reasons. Responsibilities Include:Maintain a high-visibility presence through daily foot and bicycle patrols. Ensure the security of academic, athletic, and dining facilities. Engage with the campus community continuously to foster a safe environment. Answer phone calls, both emergency and non-emergency, transfer calls to the appropriate department and provide information on university events, policies and procedures. Monitor closed circuit camera system. Handle callers and walk in traffic in emergency and non-emergency situations in a problem-solving way that projects a positive image. Detect and limit all contraband from entering the residence; make sure all students and their guest present valid picture identification upon entering the residence halls and conduct periodic floor checks during assigned duty shifts. Enforce university parking regulations; provide security for special events. Assist in medical emergencies, fires and fire drills. Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
GED or high school diploma. Must have a clean criminal record. Ability to use computers and electronic handheld devices
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in the security or law enforcement fields. Experience working in a campus community or similar environment such as parking or crowd control
