The Whitlock lab (Whitlocklab.com) in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a senior scientist to join our team. The Whitlock Lab studies bone/skeletal metabolism and the formation and function of multinucleated osteoclasts. The Lab Specialist will work closely with the PI and other lab members to complete mouse model, cell biological, and biochemical experiments in support our ongoing, long-term research projects aimed at resolving how osteoclasts form and how their dysfunction leads to the development of pediatric and geriatric skeletal diseases. The candidate will be expected to independently manage our mouse colonies, perform and execute successful in vivo experiments, and to perform routine lab ordering and organization. At least two years mouse husbandry, injection, and blood collection experience is essential for serious consideration for this position. Additional requirements include extensive mouse husbandry and genotyping experience, mouse injection experience, mouse blood collection experience, mouse dissection experience, the isolation and culture of primary cells from mice, attention to detail in experimental work and record keeping, ability to handle multiple assignments, self-motivation and eagerness to acquire new skills. Preference will be given to candidates with histology and/or microcomputed tomography experience. Minimum Qualifications:Education: Bachelor’s degree. Experience: 1 year of relevant lab experience required. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences 3 years of relevant mouse model experience in a research laboratory. Anticipated Hiring Range: $20 – 23/hour, commensurate with education and experience. This position WILL sponsor applicants already in the US for work visas.
