Position description The Department of Veterinary Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a pool of qualified Junior Specialists in research and analysis of Equine Performance. This will be a 50% time appointment for one year starting August 2026. 90% Research This position will require the ability to plan and execute laboratory experiments to obtain data of high quality for publication. The candidate will collect and analyses data in the laboratory including analysis of electrocardiogram data, immunohistochemistry, ELISA’s, western blots, and rt. PCR. Candidate will be responsible, with assistance, to collect data from live horses, harvest necropsy tissues, and maintain databases and archives of the samples and data obtained. This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in equine athletic performance. Successful candidate will also participate in field studies and research projects relating to genetic, nutritional and environmental factors affecting equine performance. The candidate compile data in spreadsheets, summarize resulting data, perform statistical analyses, and assist with writing methods and results sections of scientific papers. General responsibilities in addition to performing experiments include: helping with ordering supplies, maintaining a clean and safe lab environment, and actively participating in weekly lab meeting (including data presentation). 5% Professional Competence Participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations. Review research proposals, journal manuscripts and publications related to area of expertise. 5% University and Public Service Service will constitute mentorship and training of undergraduate students and residents in the laboratory. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team. Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application) A bachelor's degree in animal science, physiology, or a related field, documented experience in a laboratory setting, ability to work with spreadsheets and databases, ability to work safely with chemicals and biohazards. Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position) It is preferred that the candidate has equine handling experience and at least 1 year experience with benchtop research.
